Format
Four sections, one score you can act on
IELTS comes in two versions: Academic, generally used for university admission, and General Training, generally used for work and migration routes. Both are scored on the same 9-band scale — universities and immigration authorities each set their own minimum band requirement, so the number that matters depends on where you're applying.
Listening
Four recorded sections covering everyday and academic conversations.
Reading
Three long passages, with question types varying between Academic and General Training.
Writing
Two tasks — a report or letter, and an essay, depending on the version you sit.
Speaking
A face-to-face or video conversation with an examiner, in three parts.
Available as a paper-based or computer-delivered test, depending on your test centre. Requirements and accepted bands vary by university, employer and visa category — we confirm the exact figure for your situation rather than quoting a generic one.
